Book Description: Will Christians vanish in a rapture? Will seven years of apocalyptic terror overtake those left behind? Will one future Mr. Diabolical--the antichrist--rise to control the world? Will he enter a rebuilt Jewish temple, claiming to be God? Will Earth's nations attack Israel at Armageddon? Best-selling books like Left Behind and popular apocalyptic movies predict such things. Are they correct? No area of Christianity has been subject to more misguided interpretation than end time prophecy. Millions of Christians sense we are nearing Jesus Christ's return. Yet when it comes to what the majority thinks will happen during Earth's last days, and what the Bible actually says will occur, the difference is seismic. With clarity and biblical accuracy, End Time Delusions exposes massive errors now flooding through media and in much of today's sensational prophecy writing. This book closely examines tightly meshed yet speculative theories about the rapture, seven-year tribulation, antichrist, and the modern Jewish state. This book is no novelty. Buttressed with solid teachings from many of Christianity's most illustrious scholars, it lets the Bible speak for itself about the past, present, and future. |
Review:
Eschatology: One of my favorite subjects, heh. I bought this book at my local area Christian Book Store some time ago. I was in a hurry and wanted some new reading material and thought that by the name of the book it was probably going to be something good. Well, the author states that the theology promoted by the "Left Behind" series is all wrong (premillenial dispensationalism), o.k., that's good, BUT, he then goes on the promote the Historist view of Eschatology with your typical the Pope is evil, the Roman Catholic Church is the Great Whore of Babylon, Jesuits have tails that they hide. Oh, did I mention that the Pope is evil?
He goes on to dismiss two of the other main points of view about Revelation, (Preterism and Futurism) as Roman Catholic inventions, which are evil because Roman Catholics are evil, and we are deceived if we believe in Preterism or Futurism because Roman Catholics invented them, and Roman Catholics are evil.
I found that in several places Wohlberg had to crunch his numbers to make the Historist view work correctly, and at times, seemingly arbitrary dates were picked so that it would appear that certain events in European history were fulfillments of the prophecies of Revelation. I do not think the author was doing this to be deceitful, but it was something I disliked.
So if you have only been exposed to Premillenial Dispensationalism (a.k.a. "Left Behind" theology) and are looking to branch out into other view points, this book is a good basic starter to find out why the Pope is evil, I mean, more about the Historist interpretation of eschatology. But I would quickly pass on into Preterism by picking up some Gary DeMar, N. T. Wright or R. C. Sproul.
